Apple Announces Delay on New Streaming TV Service

Apple has just announced that they plan to delay their new live TV service until at least next year. Of course, they had planned to release the service this year, but many obstacles stand in the way at the present time.
What kind of obstacles?

Well, for one, discussions (ie, negotiations) with broadcasters like CBS Corp and Twenty-First Century Fox INC to get access their licensed programming are moving at a snail’s pace right now; so, of course, this has left the technology company with a severe lack of content to broadcast.

Secondly, though, Apple does not exactly have the network capacity to guarantee the same high-quality viewing experience that HD television and many internet portals can offer.

Indeed, as Marc Tayer, the author of the book “Televisionaries: Inside the Chaos and Innovation of the Digital Revolution,” says, “What they are doing is not easy.”

He goes on to discuss the complications of acquiring all the rights, as mentioned above: “That requires licensing with each individual content provider that they want to include, and make sure that the terms and conditions are such Apple can get the return on their investment at some point.”

And trying to get a return on the investment this time around is not going to be as simple as it was when Apple originally launched iTunes.

Bloomberg Intelligence senior analyst John Butler notes, “They are not in as good a position as they were when they were negotiating contracts with the music industry.”

Still, the company plans to be able to introduce a more powerful version of their already released set-top Apple TV box.
They also say that they plan to charge between $30 and $40 for the new service.
