Microsoft Corporation Says No Mini Xbox One Planned

Xbox chief Phil Spencer says any reports of slimmer version of Xbox One are “not real”

Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) has broken its silence on rampant rumours about a new gaming platform. A Chinese blog had recently reported that Microsoft Corp will trim down the Xbox One. The source had claimed that a slim version of the console would be introduced; similar to the revisions seen in the previous-generation, Xbox 360.

In previous cases, the slimmer versions became popular because they appeared better visually; were more energy efficient and performed well. The blog had also asserted that the hardware would remain the same besides the changes in its dimensions which is usually the case with such versions.

However, the official statement from Microsoft did not add to the excitement; it deflated it completely. The company's Xbox chief, Phil Spencer quashed the rumours. He confirms there is no such version of the Xbox One, in the works.

When a fan asked for his comments on the rumors about the “mini” Xbox One, Spencer was quick to say its not real. This clearly means that Microsoft is happy with the design of the console for now. Although such changes may be introduced, later in its life cycle; there are no such plans at the moment. The Xbox One will turn two in a few months; so its been in the market for very long. We believe any variants to the console should be expected in 2017 or 2018.

The Chinese blog contends the would-be variant is about one third the size of the current model of the console. It had also asserted that the mini-Xbox One would exclude the Blu-ray drive. This should have been enough to discredit the news as Microsoft had earlier faced a backlash when it had DRM restrictions on physical discs. In other words, it is extremely unlikely that the company will opt to lose the Blu-ray drive.
