Divinity: Original Sin is one of the most successful games of 2014; winning over 150 game of the year awards and nominations from the most prestigious gaming publications. Being such a widely acclaimed and successful game, it is no surprise that a sequel is in the works. Larian Studios has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the anticipated sequel titled Divinity: Original Sin 2, which has already exceeded its goal with 33 days to go.
17,380 backers have already pledged $775,244 blowing Larian Studio’s $500,000 goal out of the water with 33 days left in the campaign. Many are likely wondering why Larian Studio would even need a Kickstarter forDivinity: Original Sin 2, when the first entry was so successful and widely praised. The simple answer is that the campaign’s purpose is to expand upon what Larian Studios could already do by self funding. CEO of Larian Studios Swen Vincke commented on this, stating – “The game is funded because of the original’s success, we can already do a lot of things. But we’d like to expand from here. We’d like to create more origin stories. Each origin story means basically hiring an extra writer because of how far they go in affecting the game. We also want to expand the skills and spell systems. An extra race would be cool.”
The spell system overhaul is already underway, with more synergies between spells, such as mixing Rain and Lacerate to create rain of blood which combined with the Leech talent, enables players to regain large amounts of health by standing in pools of blood (created by the rain of blood.)
The Divinity: Original Sin Kickstarter achieved similar success, collecting 236 percent of its $400,000 goal, covering several stretch goals. Divinity: Original Sin is also in development for Playstation 4 and Xbox One as well. Check out the Divinity: Original Sin 2 Kickstarter page, as well as the official Kickstarter pitch below. Divinity: Original Sin 2 will not release until December of 2016, but already the hype has grown to colossal proportions.
